In Döblin's last novel, a European elite goes to great lengths in defense of thought patterns that were thought to be safe: "Hamlet or the Long Night Comes to an End" is an unsparing analysis of the causes of the last world war. An ensemble of young actors from several countries confronts the inner conflict of Döblin's anti-war hero in the face of the current wars.
The young soldier Edward returns badly wounded. Who is to blame for the war that cost him his leg? He cross-examines the family, who receive him with care, with probing questions, turning the storytelling evenings intended as entertainment into a tribunal.
