Over five million people in Germany live in poverty - and yet remain largely invisible in public discourse. In a society in which many feel economically threatened, what poverty actually means is lost: structurally, existentially, interpersonally.This production does not talk about poverty - but out of it. It paints a polyphonic and resistant picture of an excluded group that no longer wants to remain silent: in cooperation with the University of Duisburg-Essen, activists from the #IamPovertyAffected movement have written testimonials that tell of everyday life and isolation, but also of self-assertion and political awareness.
Director Helge Schmidt, who has won awards for his investigative theater work, stages the panopticon of voices, stories, tweets and emotions woven into a dramatic text. #ARMUTSBETROFFEN offers a stage for solidarity and confrontation with a phenomenon that fulfills a cynical function in a rich society: Precarious poverty legitimizes and justifies excessive wealth.
