"Why are we still having children?" asks Sheila Heti in her well-received novel, summing up, "Women have to have children to keep them busy. There is something threatening about a woman who is not busy having children. What will she do instead? What kind of trouble?" Her main character struggles with society's expectations, her body, her doubts, her partner, her own mother, her work as an artist, and whether she should have a child before it's too late: tick...tick...tick...
Lucy Wirth, Patrick Wengenroth and Matze Kloppe bring MOTHERHOOD to the stage in their own version with biting analysis and fragile wit as a question, defense, and contraceptive. Between appropriation, delivery and contestation, they wrestle with the text and the ballast of their own biographical and social attributions and combine their performance with live music from future pop to retro blues. Why kids? Why not? If not now, when?
