Comédie-lyrique in three acts and seven pictures - Libretto by Louis Gallet!
The plot sounds almost like SALOME: An Egyptian hetaera puts the ascetic ideals of the monk Athanaël to the test. With the promise of eternal life, he succeeds in leading the Beautiful onto the Christian path of virtue - only to discover that he himself has anything but innocent feelings for the converted courtesan. The Egyptian exoticism and the infamous dance scene at the end of the first act, in which Thaïs seductively drops the covers, gave the work, which was first performed in 1894, its scandalous reputation.
However, despite the great success of the revised second version, THAIS could not establish itself in the repertoire: Even large opera houses are still facing casting difficulties due to the extreme vocal requirements. In particular, the title role of Thaïs is regarded as one of the most demanding soprano roles in opera history, in which only exceptional talents shine undamaged.

On November 7, 1912, the Deutsches Opernhaus was inaugurated with FIDELIO and, in the following decades, served as a stage especially for Puccini's and Wagner's works. The house has remained faithful to the democratic ideal of a citizen opera after its destruction in World War II: Fritz Bornemann's new building, opened in 1961, is intended as a framework for a modern music theatre, which can be experienced from all seats as a total work of art.
