Grand Opéra in five acts - Libretto by Eugène Scribe & Émile Deschamps!

Meyerbeers Grand Opéra on the historical Anabaptist king Jean de Leyde is a carefully thought-out idea theatre and history panorama trained in mass psychology in one: the history of political radicalisation as a private and public catastrophe.

When the despotic Count Oberthal robs the simple innkeeper of his fiancée, Jean joins the Protestant Anabaptist sect. As their prophet he is to lead the masses to the Anabaptists. But powerlust and excessiveness undermine social utopia.

"Do you want to be the masters of your masters?" - With this question, the Anabaptists already stirred up the rural population at the beginning of the opera: not the classless society, not freedom, equality, fraternity, but simply a reversal of the power relations drives these hearts around. Power - this is the realization of Meyerbeer's opera creations - corrupted.

The only voice of reason are the women who - we are in the 19th century - the apolitical, powerless of this world; above all Jeans mother Fidès, who admonishes the bewitched son to conversion and offers absolute forgiveness.

On November 7, 1912, the Deutsches Opernhaus was inaugurated with FIDELIO and, in the following decades, served as a stage especially for Puccini's and Wagner's works. The house has remained faithful to the democratic ideal of a citizen opera after its destruction in World War II: Fritz Bornemann's new building, opened in 1961, is intended as a framework for a modern music theatre, which can be experienced from all seats as a total work of art.

Smooth buying of tickets with friendly staff. Grandiose places and a wonderful bizarre performance (Salome)!
What I didn't know until then: On the day of the performance there must be a valid get2card. Not (only) on the day of purchase.
(I had a sample get2card for 3 months at the first attempt to buy the cards.)
