Giacomo Puccini - Melodramma in three acts - Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica!
The literary model for Puccini's "Torture Opera" (Oskar Bie) was provided by Victorien Sardou (1831-1908) with his successful play LA TOSCA, which premiered in 1887 in Paris with Sarah Bernhardt in the title role.
After Puccini had experienced the play on a tour in Milan in 1889, he was immediately enthusiastic about the material. But the TOSCA plan initially lasts six years until Puccini, presumably inspired by another performance of the Sardou drama in Florence and Luigi Illica's work on a TOSCA libretto for the composer Alberto Franchetti (1860-1942), finds interest in the material. After a "conspiracy" between Puccini, Illica and Ricordi, the publisher succeeds in persuading Franchetti to abandon his TOSCA project and to give Puccini the rights to set the music.

Info: Deutsche Oper Berlin
On November 7, 1912, the Deutsches Opernhaus was inaugurated with FIDELIO and, in the following decades, served as a stage especially for Puccini's and Wagner's works. The house has remained faithful to the democratic ideal of a citizen opera after its destruction in World War II: Fritz Bornemann's new building, opened in 1961, is intended as a framework for a modern music theatre, which can be experienced from all seats as a total work of art.
