The Staatskapelle Berlin, with its tradition dating back to the 16th century, is one of the oldest orchestras in the world. Founded by Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg as a court chapel, it was first mentioned in a document in 1570. Initially a Kurbrandenburg court orchestra dedicated exclusively to musical service at court, the ensemble was given an expanded sphere of activity with the founding of the Royal Court Opera in 1742 by Frederick the Great.

The Staatskapelle Berlin with its existing tradition is one of the oldest orchestras in the world. For more than 20 years, Daniel Barenboim, General Music Director, and the Staatskapelle Berlin have enjoyed an extraordinary collaboration with international appeal. In the year 2000 the Maestro was elected Chief Conductor for life by his orchestra. Under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle, the Staatskapelle is also enjoying great success.
