Johann Strauß - Operetta in three acts - Libretto by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée!
"Champagne is to blame, tralalalala" - this is what the protagonists in Johann Strauss' FLEDERMAUS agree on after a night full of mix-ups and erotic slips at the end. But it's not only alcohol that is to blame, but confusion is caused above all by the intrigue of the humiliated Dr. Falke, who in a bat costume was once exposed to the mockery of small town society and is now taking his chance to take revenge on his 'good friend', the bon vivant Gabriel von Eisenstein.
And so the chamber maid as actress, the wife as Hungarian countess and Eisenstein herself as French marquis are masked and sent to Prince Orlofsky's ball. The fact that this is followed only by cat jammer in the early morning in prison is less due to the champagne than to the nature of things.
Johann Strauss succeeded with his FLEDERMAUS in creating the prototype of the Viennese operetta - waltz-impregnated, polka-obsessed and full of bitter irony. Inspired by the Offenbach Opéras bouffes from Paris, the bourgeois salon audience was mercilessly held up to the mirror - and some spectators recognized themselves on stage in the abstruse little tree change game.

Info: Deutsche Oper Berlin
On November 7, 1912, the Deutsches Opernhaus was inaugurated with FIDELIO and, in the following decades, served as a stage especially for Puccini's and Wagner's works. The house has remained faithful to the democratic ideal of a citizen opera after its destruction in World War II: Fritz Bornemann's new building, opened in 1961, is intended as a framework for a modern music theatre, which can be experienced from all seats as a total work of art.
