For director Benedikt von Peter, Aida fits into the series of female art figures of the 19th century that were less real beings than objects of longing and projection surfaces of male chauvinistic dreams and inevitably found their purpose in dying for love. But unlike Verdi's previous operas, AIDA offers an alternative to the deadly love: Amneris, the realist. Between these two women, and thus between the principles of reality and escapism, Radames tries to find a way of life. He opts for the unattainable, "exotic" dream world, but cannot unite it with his political ambitions.

On November 7, 1912, the Deutsches Opernhaus was inaugurated with FIDELIO and, in the following decades, served as a stage especially for Puccini's and Wagner's works. The house has remained faithful to the democratic ideal of a citizen opera after its destruction in World War II: Fritz Bornemann's new building, opened in 1961, is intended as a framework for a modern music theatre, which can be experienced from all seats as a total work of art.
