Fado is mainly associated with the Portuguese capital Lisbon. However, the university town of Coimbra has its very own fado tradition. The most important difference is the exclusive male line-up with differently tuned guitars, which radiate a warm timbre and thus penetrate deeper into the hearts of the listeners.
Many say Fado from Coimbra was created by the melodies of Brazilian students who came to Coimbra in 1860. Others say that this form of music was brought in by students from Lisbon and that it was the university city that changed this sound and gave it an individual touch.
Wherever Fado may have its origins, even those who don't speak Portuguese can't save themselves from all the deep feelings that come over you at the sound of the melody.
