Sophiensæle was founded in 1996 by Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig together with Jo Fabian and Dirk Cieslak (Lubricat) on the premises of the former craftsmen's club house at Sophienstraße 18 in Mitte. Today they are one of the most important production and performance venues for performance, dance, theatre and music theatre in German-speaking countries. Artists living mainly in Berlin present their innovative works here.
