Ambroise Thomas - Opera in five acts - Libretto by Michel Carré and Jules Barbier!
William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is not only perhaps his most philosophical and multi-layered tragedy, the play is also known as a drama in which, after a spectacular finale, all the protagonists lie dead on stage. Ambroise Thomas, together with the two librettists Michel Carré and Jules Barbier, has proved that "Hamlet" can also be successfully adapted for the opera stage with "Happy End" and without the great monologue of the Danish prince with the famous "To be or not to be". Your HAMLET is the most successful adaptation of the fabric to date and at the same time one of the most important French operas of the 1860s.
It emerges, similar to Charles Gounod's masterpieces, in that phase of upheaval in which a new genre develops from a synthesis of elements of the "state-supporting" Grand opéra with those of the lighter Opéra comique, which is the "Drame lyrique": thoroughly composed, with a complex musical language, but a more intimate, lyrical tone and a dramaturgy that focuses more strongly on the individual fates of the characters. And so Thomas' HAMLET is also both: rousing musical drama, but also multi-faceted poetry in the pursuit of the finest emotions in the musical interpretation of the main parts.

Info: Deutsche Oper Berlin
On November 7, 1912, the Deutsches Opernhaus was inaugurated with FIDELIO and, in the following decades, served as a stage especially for Puccini's and Wagner's works. The house has remained faithful to the democratic ideal of a citizen opera after its destruction in World War II: Fritz Bornemann's new building, opened in 1961, is intended as a framework for a modern music theatre, which can be experienced from all seats as a total work of art.
