the unfinished
The diary begins on the day of the Russian army's invasion of Ukraine. From that day onwards, the author records in countless miniatures what is happening around her - and what she herself does, thinks and feels - oscillating between anger and sadness, powerlessness and protest. And she describes the fault lines within Russian society with great accuracy: the growing rift between those who support the war and those who put themselves in danger of life and limb with their protests.Natalja Kljutscharjowa thus becomes the voice of a part of Russian civil society that is barely heard in the current discourse: those who are against the war and at the same time are plagued by permanent feelings of guilt. Almost incidentally, the text also describes the creeping dissolution of civil society through propaganda and online polemics. The fact that the author had to leave Russia immediately after the book was published and now lives in exile fits the picture.
