from WUNDERBAUM / Marleen Scholten

When he loses his job, Giovanni Cafaro from Milan invents a new profession and starts waiting in queues for others in front of offices and authorities for a fee. The actress Marleen Scholten takes his story as the basis for her monologue "La Codista". The result is an evening about waiting in line (Italian: la coda), about putting yourself in someone else's shoes and, not least, about the impatience and desire that come with waiting.

The Dutch actress and author Marleen Scholten lives in Italy and, for this project, interviewed various people in her adopted country about how they experience standstill and what it means to them. In addition, the actress herself stood in queues for hours, for example at the post office or the tax office, to experience the mechanism of intense waiting. She found chaos and simplicity there, people who came together somewhere by chance with only one purpose: to wait their turn.

Marleen Scholten won the Antonio Conti dramaturgy prize in Italy for the text.
