Based on a novel by Silvia Tschui.

In 1869, the musically gifted Swiss maid Elsie dreams of a career as a violinist in Florence; the farmhand Jakob dreams of his own horse and a life as a carter. Together, but not together, they end up stranded in Finstersee by forced marriage. An increasingly bitter struggle for their own future begins ...

Sophie Bischoff takes us into the heart of a perpetual conflict in the middle of the Swiss mountains with her diploma project in directing at the HfS Ernst Busch - with music and dialect, but without folklore. A modern fairy tale about intergenerational violence, dealing with strangers, homesickness and wanderlust - with live music and cows!

In the novel on which it is based, Silvia Tschui uses sonorous dialect-tinged language to tell a timeless relationship story of two people trying to break out and rise - fatefully bound to each other, although their ambitions are cruelly contradictory. In a hostile environment, their dreams become a poison from which they fall terminally ill.

"In the old days," the village people say, Finstersee was still called Grüensee and the lake was as friendly as the villagers. People would stop for a chat after church, meet in the inn and help out: Village idyll with "Chüe" and meadows full of "Chrottenpöschen". But that was before the cows gave gray milk and the curse spread to the larger towns through cheese wheels and embroidery. And before history repeated itself in such a shocking way ...
